How the Doves Might Fly

Senior music editor and Dove Awards enthusiast, Andy Argyrakis

Artist of the Year
Now that Tonight is finally in stores and TobyMac continues to be a triple threat on the road (rapper/singer/dancer), he’s certain to clean up. Though no stranger to the Doves, last year’s GRAMMY win only added to his visibility.

New Artist of the Year
After Chris Tomlin covered “God of This City,” Bluetree has the highest chance of collection. The modern worship troupe also put on an excellent national debut album and have built a sizable fan base.

Group of the Year
The odds are that Casting Crowns will take the top slot, simply because the worship group always seems to rack up in this category. The fact that a new studio CD shattered sales records doesn’t hurt, either.

Female Vocalist of the Year
As an opening act on the Leeland/Brandon Heath tour, Francesca Battistelli also earned tremendous exposure. When coupled with her radio domination, it’s quite likely she’ll sway even the most skeptical critics.

Male Vocalist of the Year
Brandon Heath’s obviously had a blockbuster year and deserves every second of his success, plus he’s one of the most regarded singer/songwriters of the current generation. He amassed a plethora of hits in 2009, alongside an immensely connective tour with Leeland.

Song of the Year
Perhaps the most influential worship leader in history, Chris Tomlin is generally considered a shoe-in for such awards. Add in the fact that “I Will Rise” is another anthem in the making, and it’s likely that he’ll take home the coveted trophy.

Producer of the Year
Considering he’s a consistent hit-maker, not to mention the artistic thread that always seems to run through his records, it’s practically a done deal for Ed Cash. Plus, the behind-the-boards wizard is a regular Dove winner, so perhaps he should clear a space in the trophy case at home.

Special Event Album of the Year
In the case of Oh Happy Day, three words apply: Jon Bon Jovi. Outside of showcasing his spiritual side, additional star power (Jonny Lang, 3 Doors Down, Michael McDonald, Joss Stone, Mavis Staples, Patty Griffin and Aaron Neville, to name a few) addressing the gospel sides of their personalities are sure to sell this victory.
