Sometimes when winter gloom has descended, there’s nothing better than staying in with a great big bowl of popcorn and a movie with the family. But in an age where even some commercials feel like they deserve a PG-13 or R rating, it’s not always easy finding something that adults, teens and kids can enjoy without worrying about overly gratuitous content. Here are a few flicks worth watching with the family in these wintry months. And if you feel like hitting the town, the titles with an asterisk are still in theaters.

Ratatouille, starring an adorable animated mouse named Remy (voiced by Patton Oswalt), his kitchen pals Linguini (Lou Romano) and Colette (Janeane Garofalo)

Let’s face it: When it comes to family entertainment, it’s hard to go wrong with anything Pixar. But since your family has probably just seen Up, I can’t recommend this little blast from the past, Ratatouille enough.

While the story of a mouse working in a professional French kitchen would normally warrant a call to the Better Business Bureau or at the very least, a better restaurant inspection, the story of Remy, a rodent with rather high-brow taste when it comes to food, is a winner from start to finish. There’s action, adventure, romance, and yes, a non-preachy (but still relevant) lesson for everyone who watches. In two words: fantastic entertainment.
