Newworldson

Let’s get one thing straight: Newworldson is undoubtedly one of the most unique Christian bands to come along in quite some time. That’s a good thing. Are they “universally appealing,” as they’re often touted? Probably not. But that’s also a good thing. You see, this Canadian soul/funk/gospel band is going to be an acquired taste for some, but those who “acquire” it are really gonna like the flavor.

When Newworldson debuted in early 2008 with Salvation Station, the band created a hearty buzz with its unique, funky, old-school soul/R&B sound and explosive live performances. What captured audiences was the energetic style and musicianship showcased on their album as well as on stage. The band’s roots-rock, funky style was a breath of fresh air, and unique to the sometimes generic, radio-friendly Christian music landscape.

Skip ahead two years and the band is releasing its self-titled sophomore follow-up, largely influenced – both lyrically and musically – by the band’s international travels. The new album manages to maintain the group’s musical integrity by not venturing too far from the successful formula found on their debut project. The soulful grooves are abundant, as are the funky rhythms and danceable melodies. In fact, there’s hardly a slow song on the album.

Joel Parisien’s lead vocals are as distinctive as ever on Newworldson, as he croons his way through the album’s 12 tracks. Highlights include album opener “You Set The Rhythm,” the New Orleans piano-flavored “Do You Believe In Love,” pop-flavored ballad “There Is A Way” and “That’s Exactly How I Like It.”
