Point of Grace

By Debra Akins, contributing writer, gmclife.com

We first got to know Point of Grace when their debut album released in 1993, and the group has since sold more than 6.5 million albums and earned 24 consecutive No. 1 radio singles, a feat unmatched by any artist in any genre. Still going strong with the release of their eighth studio album, No Changin’ Us, this female vocal powergroup (a trio now since Heather Payne’s departure in 2008) may be unchanged in their faith and message, but there’s a decidedly new (and refreshing) slant to their music that may attract some new fans and re-energize some old ones.

Encouraged by the success of two country radio singles (“How You Live,” “I Wish”) on their last album, How You Live, Point of Grace worked with some of Nashville’s top country music writers to create songs for No Changin’ Us. And probably the biggest coup for the group was landing in-demand producer Nathan Chapman, who recently took home Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year GRAMMY Awards for producing Taylor Swift’s Fearless. The result here is nothing short of brilliant, as he helps lead Point of Grace down a sonically new and creative path, complete with a mixture of soft rock/country tracks filled with fiddles, mandolins, steel guitars, dobros and more. The album also includes a lyrical mash of songs about faith, love and family.

What’s truly unchanged on No Changin’ Us is those signature Point of Grace harmonies – the tight, pristine vocal blend that has remained the group’s calling card all these years. And combined with the new musical direction, Point of Grace may have just found a brand new formula for success.
